Vision Skills are important for learning to read.
Vision has seemed to become my compassion or maybe you would say my obsession. It all started with my son's struggle to learn to read like the rest of the students in his classroom. Despite him being an amazing learner, it was harder than it should have been. As a teacher who teaches children to read this was life changing for both of us.
For four years I have been searching for answers. I have found many but still continue to search for more. The more I know the more I want to know. This has been a journey I never would have joined, but I feel it has made me be a better mom, teacher, and person. It has most importantly made me understand my son, my students, and other family members quirks and struggles more!
My hope is that I can help other children with the same struggles. Maybe helping their process be a little easier. I do not want any more of my students to struggle with something that has help available. As a parent I have learned that you must be your child's advocate! Symptoms of Possible Vision Problems
*Complains of blurred vision-
* Rubs eyes frequently

Eye coordination Problem
*Closes or covers one eye
*Occasionally sees double
*Able to read for only a short time

Eye focusing problems
* Poor reading comprehension.
*Says eyes are tired
*Has headaches when reading

Eye tracking problems
*Frequently loses place, skips lines when reading
*uses finger to keep place (not in K/1).
*Short attention span

Faulty visual form perception
* Mistakes words with similar beginnings
*Difficulty recognizing letters, words
*trouble learning basic math concepts of size, magnitude, and position.

Faulty visual motor integration
*Sloppy handwriting and drawing
*Can't stay on lines
*Poor copying skills
*Can respond orally but not in writing

Difficulty with laterality and directionality
* Trouble learning right and left
*Reverses letters and words
